The category 4 hurricane that is currently moving its way up the Caribbean is expected to reach North Carolina and Hampton Roads by the weekend. The northern coast of North Carolina and Virginia are likely to feel at least some of the storm’s fury with heavy rain, gusty winds, large waves and dangerous surf. Tidal flooding may occur depending on the track of the storm, as will the amount of rain and severity of wind.
When storms hit, it's crucial to have the proper gear handy ahead of time. We recommend to all our local friends and families, no matter what industry you work in, to be sure you have some of the following necessary items on hand to stay safe:
- rubber boots
- rain gear & hi-viz gear
- flashlights & spare batteries
- battery-operated weather radio
- hard hats
- first aid supplies
- additional fuel
Work-related hazards that could be encountered in the wake of a hurricane include: electrical hazards, Carbon Monoxide, musculoskeletal hazards, heat stress, motor vehicles, hazardous materials, fire, confined spaces and falls, and injuries due to tree or limb removal. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
